01 Jun 2012, Posted by admin in Films in VVP

Hello All!!

We are so excited to start up our summer season.  It’s June and we’re almost ready for action.  We need to finalize a few more titles and we promise, the schedule will be posted next week.  We are excited this year to be sponsored by Jersey City Medical Center and Silverman-Building Neighborhoods–without their generous contributions we would not have been here this summer!!

This year  we will be posting updates on our twitter account @vvpjc and on Facebook www.facebook.com/VanVorstParkAssociation. Oh and one more thing—alot of people ask how you can help us–well, how about coming to our Fundraiser?  Save June 30th for sassy sexy sultry night of Tango at the Barrow Mansion–details to follow!

Now get your lawn chairs cleaned off, come up with some yummy picnic ideas and save Wednesday June 13th for our first film of the summer!!

May 2012 VVPA Meeting Reminder

15 May 2012, Posted by admin in News You Can Use

Meeting Reminder & Correction! Neighbors!!

Tonite is our VVPA monthly meeting at Barrow Mansion–7:30pm.  Joining us this evening is Sue Mack–School Board Member and Brigid D’Souza–Brigid is a local parent who helped create a meetup group called “Jersey City Schools Meetup” to help connect parents, residents, taxpayers, and local leaders on schools-related issues. The group serves 2 purposes: 1) to calendar events to enable Jersey City residents with an interest in the schools to connect in-person and 2) to provide an online forum that supports the meetups.  The meetup group is at www.jerseycityschools.org. Please come out to learn more.

It was brought to our attention that yesterdays newsletter referred to Brigid as the founder of JC Moms Meetup group.  Brigid D’Souza IS NOT “the founder of the Jersey City Moms Meetup Group” BUT “the founder of the Jersey City Schools Meetup Group.”  The Jersey City Schools Meetup Group is in no way affilated with the Jersey City Moms Meetup Group.  Our apologies for any confusion!

Also one last special event happening in a few weeks —“Come celebrate another year of policy and community accomplishments with Bike JC at the third annual Jersey City Ward Tour, a sixteen-mile group bike ride through all six wards of Jersey City on June 3. The Tour starts and finishes at Exchange Place, leaving at 11 am. Registration is required and is free online at bikejc.org with a suggested donation of $5.”

See you tonite!!

No Meetings July or August

13 May 2012, Posted by admin in News You Can Use

The VVPA will not be meeting this July or August.

We would still love to hear from you.  Do you have any issues or concerns that you feel need to be addressed at a future meeting? Our goal is to involve you–our neighbors– as much as possible. Who do you want to speak to? What concerns do you have regarding the park or your block or Jersey City as a whole?  Our park and our neighborhood, whether you are in Ward E or Ward F is important to us.  We want to keep it safe, secure and a place you want to live.  We are here to help you.

We are also actively looking for new Board members–it requires only a committment to making your neighborhood the best place to live.  Attend 3 meetings a year and you are eligible. It’s that simple.  Board members meet after our Tuesday meetings to come with ideas for the next month.  And thats it. Make a difference, make new friends, make your mark. Join us.

Our TANGO2012 was a success!! Thanks to all of you who came drank, ate and tangoed!  And to those of you who couldn’t make it but still mailed us donations–thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! Special SPECIAL thanks to ME CASA, MADE WITH LOVE, TOMMY 2 SCOOPS, FIZZY LIZZY, NJ BEER CO., JERSEY WINE AND SPIRITS and Fred Sullivan and Ritsuko Arpon for their amazing talent and teaching patience– It was such a success…there may be more dancing nights in the future??? Any dance you want to learn??? Email us–we’ll try to make it happen.

Van Vorst Park is still hopping with Shakespeare in the Park, the Farmers Market on Saturdays and Free Films every other Wednesday brought to you by Jersey City Medical Center and Silverman Building Neighborhoods–check out http://www.filmsinvanvorst.com for our full summer schedule.  Next film is THE HELP by Nate Taylor on July 25th.. Free Popcorn too!!!

May VVPA Meeting

Brigid Dsouza & Sue Mack

  • Brigid is the founder of “JC Moms Meetup Group”. She found a lot of schools-related interest in that community, thus formed a meetup group exclusive to schools at www.jerseycityschools.org.
The group serves 2 purposes: 1) to calendar schools-related events, be it BOE meetings, info sessions (like one we had with Steve Fulop, PS3 and PS5 PTA reps, and Marvin back in Feb), or evening meetups among parents at local schools who want to connect and 2) to provide a moderated discussion board that is organized, coordinated, and structured to enable people to focus in on issues and areas they care about. There is no political agenda other than to connect parents with each other, with resources such as the BOE and public leaders like Steve Fulop, and provide an efficient means of getting people engaged.  The meetup group is at www.jerseycityschools.org
  • Sue Mack, BOE Member.  Sue is always very open with us regarding all current Board of Education matters.  We love having her join our discussions.

April VVPA Meeting

Scott Seale Wayne Street Development
Elizabeth Ruebman NYNJBaykeeper

  • Scott Seale will present to us his plans for a NEW building project that will be located at 100-102 Wayne Street, next to Subias.  It is currently a 5 car parking lot.  He is looking for communtiy feedback–now is your time to voice your concerns.
  • Elizabeth Ruebman works for NYNJBaykeeper.org.  The Baykeeper’s mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary – one of the most urban estuaries on the planet. Since 1989, they have served as citizen advocate for the bays, streams, and shores of the Estuary. Baykeeper stops polluters, champions public access, influences land use decisions, and restores habitat – benefiting the natural and human communities of our watershed.  She will be discussing with us tomorrow night the issues that have been created by the raw sewage flowing into our rivers and bays created by combined sewer overflows.
