May Events this weekend NOT TO MISS!

O, the month of May, the merry month of May, So frolic, so gay, and so green, so green, so green! (poem by Thomas Dekker, 1600) Hola Friends and Neighbors–

We are gearing up for a great Spring–Don’t forget our meeting on May 15th…But there are some special events happening this week in honor of Jersey City’s first Green Week and one super fun event not to miss that we wanted to share with everyone….

Saturday May 5th:
Start the day with a Bike tour of the City Parks co-sponsored by Bike JC with breakfast donated by Legal Grounds. Leaving City Hall at 8am for a 16 mile tour~~
After that….Van Vorst Park is the place to be!
First Farmers Market of the season with 11 Vendors~ 8am-3pm.
Friends of Van Vorst Park Fundraiser Flea Market from 9am-5pm.
Friends of Van Vorst Park Celebration from 11am-3pm!!!  Green Events, Tattoos & Games with the Recreation Dept of JC, Free Face Painting with Umpa Lumpa, Informational tables about summer programs from DPW, JCIA, the Recreation Dept, and the Jersey City Free Public Library. Music by the Solar Punch Band and free bus tours at 1 & 3pm to the PJP Landfill that is currently being transformed into the Marion Greenway.

And the perfect way to start the weekend????  The annual Cinco de Mayo parade and all night fiesta at Bar Majestic & The Merchant starting at 4pm on Friday May 4th!

(oh and watch for the largest full moon of the year this Saturday night  !! VVPA nor do the Friends of VVP have anything to do with it…but it sure will be fun to see!)

  • Scott Seale will present to us his plans for a NEW building project that will be located at 100-102 Wayne Street, next to Subias.  It is currently a 5 car parking lot.  He is looking for communtiy feedback–now is your time to voice your concerns.
  • Elizabeth Ruebman works for NYNJBaykeeper.org.  The Baykeeper’s mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary – one of the most urban estuaries on the planet. Since 1989, they have served as citizen advocate for the bays, streams, and shores of the Estuary. Baykeeper stops polluters, champions public access, influences land use decisions, and restores habitat – benefiting the natural and human communities of our watershed.  She will be discussing with us tomorrow night the issues that have been created by the raw sewage flowing into our rivers and bays created by combined sewer overflows.

It feels like summer this week in Jersey City!!  Spring is officially here and we know what comes after Spring…Films in Van Vorst!

We are putting together our line up and are still looking for suggestions.  Got a classic you think would be perfect in the park?  How about a documentary that you’ve seen that you can’t stop thinking about.  Are your children singing songs from a Disney film?  Let us know

  • We are very excited to welcome our Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop to this months meeting.  He will be updating us on all the City Council happenings including his thoughts on the upcoming Board Of Education elections, reval process and much more.
  • ME CASA is a new restaurant on Varick Street.  It is taking over the old Hernandez space near the corner of Christopher Columbus.  The new owner would like to meet with his neighbors to discuss his plans and get any feedback.
  • There are 2 new detectives on our East District force, Detectives Doran and Hulings. They will be joining us to take questions and concerns regarding the ongoing issues of safety in our neighboorhood.   Now is the time to speak up and be heard!! COME TO THE MEETING!

Important News A meeting of the Jersey City Ward Commission will be held on Tuesday, January
31,2012 at 6:00 p.m.
in the Anna Cucci Memorial Council Chambers, City Hall, 2nd Floor, 280 Grove Street, Jerseý City, New Jersey.

At this meeting, the Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed changes to the ward boundaries and adopt a new Ward Map in order to be in compliance with the Ward Law.

Please be aware this affects our Van Vorst Park Neighborhood.

Kevin Pemoulie–owner of the new Thirty Acres Restaurant that is currently under construction at the corner of Jersey and Wayne will stop by to meet us and answer any questions about this newest addition to our Downtown neighborhood.

Carol McNicol –-Companion Animal Trust.  Carol oversees a non-profit organization here in Downtown dealing with our feral cat community and other cats that are in need of homes.  Do you have feral cats on your block and wonder what you can do to help?  Carol is here to answer our questions!!

Sundays….Hudson County animal welfare organizations Companion Animal Trust (CAT) and Hudson County Animal League (HCAL) are partnering to find homes for homeless community cats through the “A Cat in Every Home” campaign.  The organizations are hosting weekly public adoption events on Sundays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the Parish Hall of Grace Church, located at 39 Erie St., in Downtown Jersey City at the corner of Second Street.

Ladies on The Mic is very proud to present this free concert on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 7pm – 9:30pm at Art House Productions.

The two featured musical guests are bands that intertwine their classical training with jazz, rock & pop. Double-Breasted a trio consisting of Ardith Collins on Cello, Josh Bicknell on percussion and Kristy Chmura on Harp. Rose & The Nightingale is a powerhouse quartet of female virtuosi celebrating the sublimity of gardens through poetry and song. Band members for Rose & The Nightingale include Jody Redhage a composer, vocalist & cellist, Sara Caswell on violin & mandolin, Laila Biali on keyboards & vocals, and Leala Cyr on vocals and trumpet.

No December Meeting-Holiday Break!

Our next meeting is January 17th 2012. Make it your New Year’s resolution to get more involved in your community.  It’s alot easier than losing weight or giving up smoking!

December 17th-VVPA & Friends of VVP Winter Wonderpark in Van Vorst Park–Starting at 8am with the Farmers Market till 3pm…Not Yo Mama’s Craft Fair from 11-5pm (ShOp LoCaL)…3pm-5pm Crafts, storytelling, Hot Chocolate & cookies…4pm SANTA!!!, 4:45pmXmas tree lighting!!! Full day of Festivities–COME JOIN THE FUN!!!!  And in the giving spirit bring canned food for Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry or canned pet food (preferably cat) for Liberty Humane—

December 14-18th Nimbus Dance Works presents A Jersey City Nutcracker  Jersey City Nutcracker tells the story of two children’s urban Christmas adventure leading them through fantasy, adversity and celebration and teaching them lessons about friendship and community along the way. This adaption of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic is performed by professional dancers from Nimbus Dance Works joined by youth and adults from the community as they portray familiar characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Rat King, the Arabian Princess and Drosselmeyer  all with a Jersey City twist!
