News

On Friday, the VVPA met with Steve Fulop and Candice Osbourne to discuss the overwhelming issues our community has with the 87 micro units in our neighborhood. Despite what the City had said in the Hudson Reporter, they can not support the community against this development because they believe their hands are tied both financially and legally.

Despite Mayor Fulop’s opinion. .. this is not over. We have been told we have a legitimate case legally, procedurally, and on principal and your involvement is key.

Tuesday night we will be discussing our plan of action. We have outlined strategies and will be assigning jobs. We need everyone’s involvement and attention at this time. It is extremely important to make this meeting. If you can not, please send a representative in your place.

We need your voice, your presence and DONATIONS to convince our Mayor to do the right thing and stand up for the community and not to defend outside developers.

It is imperative that we raise as much money as we can in the coming weeks to retain a law firm. Since the Van Vorst Park Association is a non profit 501c3 organization, all donations are tax deductible. You can donate via PayPal at brightandvarick.blogspot.com. You can also send a check to the VVPA at 83 Wayne Street Jersey City NJ 07302. PLEASE share the donation information with all your neighbors.

All donations shall be used toward the Bright and Varick legal defense. Please note so on your check or online donation. Donations shall be tracked and if funds are not necessary, (we hope) monies can be reimbursed a proportional amount to the funds spent.

Come to our meeting on Tuesday night October 29th-7:30pm at the Barrow Mansion, hear our plans and find out how to participate and have your voices heard!!!!

Ellen Simon & Micheline Amy-Board of Education Candidates

Ellen & Micheline spoke with us briefly on their background and goals
if they were to be elected to the Board of Education. They both have children in public schools here in Jersey City and have been active PTA members. Some of the highlights of their campaign…longer school days for our children to allow time for recess, expanding the federally funded school breakfast program, bringing translators to BOE meetings and having them start later to accommodate parents coming home from work, engaging Neighborhood Associations with their local schools, etc. Great meeting them and we wish them luck.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO VOTE ON NOVEMBER 5th.

CAKE LUSH 437 Jersey Ave:
Our construction liaison gave an update on CAKE LUSH/CARVEL, LLC at the corner of Bright & Jersey. This property has been denied a zoning variance in the past for restaurant use, appealed and lost in NJ Supreme Court and was denied by Historic Preservation Commission last month. The same applicant will be asking for the same variance this evening at the Zoning Board of Adjustments, City Council Chamber, City Hall at 6pm. Please come and voice your concerns. STOP BY on your way home from work!

We are still unsure when the developer will present his plans to the Planning Board. We were unable to obtain a set of plans to post on our blog. The JCRA told us that the developer “is concerned with having plans privately reviewed that are not approved by the Planning Department.” You can call the Planning office at 201.547.5010 and ask when they will be available to view. Or if you can go to Planning office: 30 Montgomery 14th Floor. We will let you all know as soon as we do when this in on the Planning Board agenda.

We discussed fundraising. We’ve added a donate button under the What You Can Do page on our blogspot.

West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet”. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the Jets led by Riff and the Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love.

UNITED WATER ISSUES PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR PORTIONS OF JERSEY CITY

Includes Limited Area of Downtown Jersey City, excluding Newport

Jersey City, NJ, Jul 14, 2013, 3:30pm

Due to the loss of pressure in the system caused by the 12″ main break, United Water has issued a precautionary boil water advisory today to residents in the following downtown section of Jersey City.

The affected area of Jersey City is from the Hoboken border to Grand Street, and from Interstate 78 to the waterfront, excluding the Newport area.

These Jersey City residents should boil their water for at least one minute for the following: drinking, cooking, or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities: showering, washing dishes or clothes.

“United Water’s emergency crews are working at the site in an effort to restore service to customers,” said Chris Riat, senior director of NJ contract operations for United Water. “Our number one priority is to get service restored to the homeowners and businesses of Jersey City. Our professionally trained emergency crews will not rest until that is accomplished.”

MICHAEL SANZEN 53-55 Mercer Street Project:
Michael and his team have presented to the Zoning Board and Historic Preservation Commission.  The project is proposing to build an addition on onto exsisting building at the side of said property.  The new 3 story addition would incorporate a carriage house style garage with one parking spot at the first level. The total unit count for the property would be reduced from three units to two units.  The variance being requested from Zoning is to maintain the parking space as part of the addition.  The owner is interested in any feedback from his neighbors about the project.

CAKE LUSH:
We welcome back Greggy Soriano and the owners of 437 Jersey Ave(corner of Jersey Ave. and Bright St.) for a presentation of his Cake Lush Bakery/Restaurant. They will be updating us with proposed plans for a new bakery / restaurant and to hear feedback from community.  Variances for this project will be required to convert the retail space into a Category One restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Variances are also sought for minimum lot depth, lot area, building coverage, lot coverage and rear yard setback.
FYI: They will be presenting this same project in front of the Historic Preservation Commission on Monday July 15th at 7:30pm.

CANDICE OSBOURNE–WARD E COUNCILWOMAN
Our newest Councilwoman from Ward E will join us for the first time!! Congrats to Candice!  She will give a brief talk and then answer questions and discuss issues with us covering a variety of topics. Recently she inquired with the VVPA and the DCNA if we could provide her office with a list of priorities regarding traffic calming in our respective neighborhoods.  Any thoughts on traffic/pedestrian issues–please bring them to our discussion Tuesday night.
